A Versatile Safety Squat Bar

The Bells of Steel SS4 combines a cambered bar design, padded shoulder support and interchangeable handles for a range of strength exercises. The main bar is supplied with one pair of Straight Handles, giving you a practical starting point for squats, good mornings and other compatible movements.

Its 32mm shaft, 2,200mm overall length and needle-bearing sleeves provide a full-size speciality-bar setup. The bar and sleeves use black titanium plating, with 300mm of loadable sleeve length on each side for Olympic plates.

Choose Your Option

  • SS4 Safety Squat Bar with Straight Handles: the complete bar, shoulder pad and one pair of Straight Handles.
  • Spider Handles (Pair): longer angled handles for an alternative hand position.
  • Seal Row Handles (Pair): neutral-grip handles for compatible rowing setups.
  • Chain Handles (Pair): chain-mounted handles that allow a freer hand position.
  • Straight Handles (Extra Pair): replacement or additional Straight Handles; one pair already comes with the main bar.

Important: the four handle-only options do not include an SS4 bar. Select the complete-bar option if you need the bar itself.

This is my first experience with a safety squat bar, and my first experience with Bells of Steel. I am very impressed so far. I love squats, but my poor shoulder mobility and elbow tendinitis prevented me from enjoying it. The SS4 allows me to squat without elbow pain, and because of this I am able to squat more often. The pad is very comfortable, and I guess time will tell how well this holds up. The knurling on the handles is just right. I l would recommend this to anyone looking for a good SSB.

I can squat heavy without shoulder pain. Bought the row handles as well. Excellent build quality. Really functional. Will add another dimension to back day.

Late with my review SSB3 is an excellent specialty bar now superseded by the SSB4. Despite being late with this review, the SSB3 deserves recognition for its quality design and performance.

The SSB3 featured a comfortable camber with well-positioned handles and durable padding that made squatting different (what I was looking or) but also opens up a bunch of other comfortable options, calf raise, standing and seated good mornings and much more.

The bar's thoughtful design allowed for proper posterior chain engagement while reducing strain on shoulders and wrists. The padding struck that perfect balance between comfort and support.

Even with the SSB4 now available, the SSB3 represented outstanding value in the specialty bar market. If the newer version has built upon these solid foundations, it must indeed be fantastic for serious lifters seeking alternatives.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

I’m a 55 year old woman with scoliosis and a fairly recent interest in powerlifting. With my long femurs and curvy spine, the back squat has been my greatest challenge. I recently added the SS4 SSB to my home gym setup, and I’m really enjoying it; I’m able to stay more upright during the squat and also minimize shoulder strain. SSB box squats have helped me work on balance and hitting consistent depth. Thanks for a great product!

I am someone with a history of herniated discs and am not the most flexible in the angles either due to sports injuries. With normal squat bars it's difficult for me to reach full range but with the SS4 that is no more. I can easily feel the quads engaging each rep especially when my heels are slightly elevated.

Padding is very comfortable even with 315+ lbs on the bar. Wish I would have bought this bar years ago.

I have a regular barbell, a buffalo bar and now the SS4 and I prefer the SS4 over the other two for squats easily.

Gets the job done for an affordable price. I have no issues with the bar. The SS3 was not wide enough for my rack (they call that out but I didn’t pay attention) so I returned it and got the SS4. The return process was easy and fast- customer service was great. Def don’t love made in China, but I love my wallet. Lolol and U.S. brands are literally 3 x as much. Great value. Great pad. Good looking and all that. Great purchase.

Great bar! Padding is comfortable and consistent throughout the pad, and the vinyl feels great and looks great with the branding. The knurled handles are for sure a highlight, they look great and feel great in your hands during use, way better and more premium feel than plastic handles. The rotating sleeves make squats feel a bit better vs fixed sleeves. The sleeves themselves look great, I have not had any significant marking during normal use so far. And the end caps look great! Nice touch adding the bar and handle weights on there. Overall hard to beat, especially for the price. Glad I went with the SS4. Would buy again.

With the normal handles it weighs about 25kg, so that is something to note if you're used to a normal 20kg barbell.
